Class of 1976
Bagoye, John
Apr 02, 2007
Hi everyone!
What a blast stumbling on this site. I loved reading about life after Live Oak. (LALO?)
It seems that I have combined my love of art with my love of food in much of my life.
While at Gavilan, after graduation, I started painting billboards for Casa De Fruta and that turned into a 12 year love affair. I got involved in all their retail businesses as a merchandiser/buyer as well getting a chance to redesign their logo and much of their retail packaging. From there I had the idea to take the 'Casa concept' to malls, and we did. We broke all the rules with that first mall store in Valley Fair, San Jose. I even collected mossy old shingles for that authentic 'run-down' store front. It was a hit.
I lived in the middle of their cherry orchard, found my wife at their fruit stand, and never had a bad day working there. What an adventure it was at Casa de Fruta.
From there I founded California Orchards with a partner in 1994 It was a chain of gourmet food and gift stores in malls throughout California. That partnership sucked.
I was married in 1990, to Julie, a wonderful woman who was headed to Capitola from Fresno with a friend the day I met her. Neither of us wanted kids, and still don't.
In '97, I opened John Bagoye's Orchard Marketplace in Macy's at Valley Fair. Another gourmet food store where I created my own line of sauces, bread dippers and balsamic vinegar.
I got bored with that after 5 years and Julie and I decided to go live at the beach in Capitola. We ended up living above Margaritaville, where we met on our first date.
In 2004, I partnered up with Uesugi Farms Pumpkin Park in Morgan Hill to create The Field Of Screams. (fieldofscreamsmorganhill.com) It's a haunted attraction that scratches my itch to create and fulfills my desire not to work an 8-5 job. In '06 Pumpkin Pete's Enchanted Hayride was born. I find myself getting to play Walt Disney on a very small scale. This year the hayride becomes spooky at night, so currently, my days are filled with script writing, voice-overs, new art, pneumatics and creating Hollywood-type monsters while learning the art of prosthetic make-up.
In my spare time I started painting with oils and a palet knife and actually have sold a few. I also have been playing a little blues piano since '84.
Life above Margaritaville is one big party, and although I have never been drunk, ever, as they say in Capitola, "It's all good!"
Howdy, I'm currently enjoying life quite a bit with wife number two. I first married a fellow Acorn, Kristina Springer. Yep, Mr. Springer's (the teacher) daughter. That lasted twelve or so years & graced us with two pretty cool children who are now 23 & 21, Justin & Heather. I went to work for IBM for a bunch of years & now work for Lockheed Martin in Boulder Colorado. We live in a logcabin in the trees on a couple acres of land & have four dogs. I've been involved in Vintage Auto Racing here in Colorado for the last ten years as a hobby. Can't seem to finish my latest race car though. Never enough money or time, oh well. I sincerely hope everyone is doing well & enjoying life.

After spending almost as much time in college as anywhere else, I pretty much tossed it all and now spend my days in Yoga practice, painting (not very well), reading (novels, mostly), traveling (all over the world), getting into "home remodeling" projects (in a rather big way) or just playing with our dogs. Okay, it's not quite that simple a life, but I am known around Honolulu as a DIY fanatic. I married a great guy, who fortunately likes to travel as much as I do and works enough for us both (so I have the time to rip out another wall or pour another concrete slab...).

My life summed up in two separate quotes:
"Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts." -- Coach John Wooden
-------------
And, as the heroine of the book "Eat, Love, Pray" pondered as she sat in her divorce attorney's office, wishing for an amicable and non-adversarial end to her marriage:
"I wanted to be all Gandhi about this. I wanted to be all Nelson Mandela about this. Not realizing at the time that both Gandhi and Mandela were lawyers."

You won't find me in your year books as I only attended the last semester after moving back from New York. Hey Fellow Acorns! Time for an update. I had to acually do the math to figure out it has been 35 years since we graduated. High time for another reunion. I would be happy to help coordinate the effort. Even a muli-year reunion would be fun. Class of 1977 did a great job and was enjoyed by all. My stats: Living in Tustin, CA. and let's say a lot of years in the Hotel Industry working for Disneyland hotel, Hilton and now Sheraton. 3 great kids: Kelsey and Austin are 16 and Hannah 11. Still busy with baseball and soccer amoung many other things. I visit M.H. at every opportunity and always look forward to 4th of July. I saw a number of you at the 20th reunion and had a lot fun. I have a lot of great memories from the day and would love to re-connect with my fellow Acorns.

The Live Oak Home & School Club needs your support! I am currently one of the co-presidents of the LO H&S Club and we are trying to raise funds to purchase a new electronic marquee for the front of the school. The front of the school was recently remodeled, but the marquee is the same one installed in 1975. It's a little outdated! Our fundraiser is called "Adopt A Bulb". The marquee will take about 8,000 bulbs! If you would like to help us out, please go to LiveOakHighSchoolHSC@yahoo.com or you can send a check to LOHS, 1505 E. Main Ave. MH, CA 95037-Attn: H&S Club. Any amount will help us reach our goal! Thanks for your help!

My lovely wife, Dawn, and I have been happily married for ten years, live in Alameda, and have a son, Dmitri (Dima), in kindergarten. I’m a licensed professional engineer in both civil and mechanical engineering and have a great job as a civil engineer for the East Bay Regional Park District (www.ebparks.org).
I graduated from Cal in 1980, spent one year designing yachts, almost ten years designing commercial solar and cogeneration energy systems, one year teaching high school math, and more than ten years at a small civil/structural consulting engineering firm. More importantly, I’ve enjoyed lots of backcountry skiing, rock climbing and ocean kayaking (LtCdr Tsunami Rangers – also see David Whalen ’77).
Dawn is an amazing woman (two masters’ degrees, own kayak, beautiful, athletic, etc.), but I was really compelled to marry her when she passed the pre-marriage snow camping test: She skied well with a pack, wasn’t alarmed when our water bottles froze solid before dinner, didn’t mind sleeping on the snow between two smelly guys (we gave off heat), and to this day she rarely teases me about running out of stove fuel in the morning (required to melt snow for water). Dima enjoyed his first cross-country ski lessons last winter, so Dawn and I are hopeful that we will soon return to being avid skiers.
It was fun to see old classmates (and I do mean old) at the reunion and I look forward to the next.

I've been in Oregon since 1983, mostly in and around Grants Pass. If this profile can be edited I'll come back later and regale everyone with amazing tales of my bold and lusty adventures (many of which are actually true!) but honestly, some of it has been pretty danged weird, so first I have to devise a semi-reasonable justification for my impudence and social impropriety.

Hi All! Wow, I just found out about this website! Looks like hardly anyone knows about it from our class. Spread the word. Myself, I'm still living in M.H. but I work in Milpitas in the electronics industry. I never got married (got close once). No Kids (except for myself... Hee hee heee). For those of you living outside of the M.H. area, has it ever changed from our high school days. I'm living in a development which used to be the Alosi's walnut orchard! And what used to be a big hay field is now a big soccer facility. And on the weekends, it's FULL of kids (future Acorns). It's amazing how populated it has become. The area doesn't grow fruits or vegetables anymore, they grow HOUSES! The last I heard, the high school is on double shifts. I've heard they're talking about building an another high school. Anyway, I hope you're all doing well... :)
